Green Juice & Green Smoothie Recipes
In this post, guest blogger Lauren offers her thoughts on the benefits of Green Juice and Green Smoothies and gives us some recipes:
Green is a hot term these days: green clothing, green cars, green companies, green lifestyles, etc. While most of us are adapting to the green goodness around us, what about adding some green within? I know that for most people the idea of drinking “green juice” can be less than appetizing. Well this recipe and the benefits of green juice will change your mind! Chlorophyll, the green pigment of plants, is actually quite beneficial to the human body. Not only does Chlorophyll offer amazing detoxifying properties, it also helps stimulate the production of red blood cells. This can prove to be very beneficial with those who suffer with mild to moderate blood related disorders such as anemia or excessive menstrual flow. In simplest terms, the main reason for this is that the chemical structure of the Heme portion of red blood cells is very similar to the chemical structure of chlorophyll. This similarity makes it easy for the body to use the Chlorophyll to stimulate red blood cell production.
Furthermore, Chlorophyll been studied for its anticancer properties. Kale, spinach, broccoli, and other greens such as dandelion, all contain high amounts of chlorophyll, indicating their health benefits. Dandelion greens can be quite bitter on their own, but mixed in the right juice or smoothie recipe, their flavor becomes very mild. Dandelion is also known not only for its major detoxification effects but also for its healing properties. This nutrient dense green has been known to improve liver health and aid in weight loss. It contains a wide variety of nutrients such as protein, minerals, and vitamins such as vitamin A. Dandelion actually possesses higher vitamin A content than carrots! Try the juice recipe below to jumpstart your morning, give you a burst of energy in the afternoon, detox your body, improve your blood health, or accelerate your weight loss regimen. You will be pleasantly surprised by the wonderful taste of this drink as well as its amazing benefits! I actually made this drink for a couple of my friends earlier today and they were astounded by how delicious it was! I am sure you will be too.

You are probably asking yourself, “what in the world is a green smoothie?!” I know a green smoothie is counterintuitive, but once you realize how tasty and beneficial these smoothies can be, you might even forget it is green! Green smoothies have many of the benefits as green juice plus the fiber and yummy beneficial fruits like bananas and berries. A good green smoothie recipe should not even taste green, but it will be just as refreshing as any other smoothie plus the added benefits of greens. As always, I encourage you to play with your food and adapt the recipes to suit your taste. If the idea of a green smoothie freaks you out, start with a small amount of greens and work your way up.
